The Historical Society of Pottawattamie County operates two museums in Council Bluffs. The first is the Historical Squirrel Cage Jail built in 1885 as a three story rotating jail. It was in use until 1969. The jail is one of the last three rotating jails left in the country. It is located at 226 S Main St. The second museum is the RailsWest Railroad Museum located at 1512 S Main St. The museum is located in the old Rock Island Depot built in 1889. There is plenty of railroad memorabilia inside and rolling stock outside. The musuem is also home to G.O.S.O.M.E (Greater Omaha Society of Model Engineers who built and maintain an extensive H.O. scale layout of Council Bluffs and Omaha.
